The Great Lakes are not for sale or exploitation by harmful energy demonstration projects, that jeopardize 21% of the world’s fresh water. Two organizations who have been part of the fight to keep wind turbines out of the Great Lakes – The North American Platform Against Wind Power and Great Lakes Wind Truth – have announced their recognition of two Western New York legislators who have been allies in this effort: New York State Senator George Borrello and U.S. House Representative Nick Langworthy. Both lawmakers have demonstrated a strong and consistent commitment to protecting the unique natural resources of the Great Lakes – its waters, airspace, wildlife, tourism and recreational heritage which exists at a scale and beauty unmatched anywhere else in North America.
Senator George Borrello is recognized for his strong and consistent opposition to industrial wind development on the Great Lakes. He has worked closely with local, state, and regional groups across New York, Ohio, and Ontario to raise awareness and build coalitions around this shared concern. Senator Borrello has not only spoken out but taken legislative action, introducing a bill (S.1448) to ban industrial wind turbines on New York’s freshwater lakes.
“Industrializing the Great Lakes was a bad idea 15 years ago, and it’s still a bad idea today,” said Senator George Borrello. “These waters are too valuable—ecologically, economically, and culturally—to become testing grounds for risky energy experiments. At the recent rally in Sunset Bay, I joined concerned citizens and advocates to reaffirm our commitment to preserving the integrity of this irreplaceable natural resource. The Great Lakes must be protected—not exploited.”
The legislation introduced by Senator Borrello is in consideration in the Senate Committee on Environmental Conservation.
The Senator’s leadership on the issue has led to both the Erie and Chautauqua County legislatures passing resolutions opposing wind turbines in Lake Erie. They have been joined by 90 percent of the towns in the two counties. Together, the counties represent more than 1 million residents.
Congressman Nick Langworthy is also being honored for his leadership at the federal level. He introduced legislation to prohibit developers from accessing federal tax credits for wind turbine construction on the Great Lakes, recognizing that many of these projects are financially unviable without government subsidies. Langworthy has stated that the measure would “effectively stop developers from pursuing these projects.”
“The fight to preserve the majesty and environment of the Great Lakes has been long and hard,” says Lange, CEO of North American Platform Against Wind Power. “The push to industrialize the Great Lakes persists as a deeply misguided effort—fueled by misinformation, economic short-sightedness, and the certainty of environmental harm. It’s time to support a complete ban or moratorium, that lasts the ages.” Please see Great Lakes Wind Truth for more information on the breadth of the fight with the OPSB (Ohio Power Siting Board).
The purpose of the awards, which includes key people in the community fight for preservation of the Great Lakes and watershed, is to advertise the vibrancy of the ongoing fight, and to honor key persons ongoing, who are and have been dedicated to a total moratorium. NA-PAW extends a wide circle of thanks to ALL who have worked tirelessly even for decades, and who are included in this “appreciation.”
Congratulations to Senator George M. Borrello, and Congressman Nick Langworthy. Our deepest thanks.
